Coyote Poets of the Universe
AllAboutJazz.com
This shrewd ensemble from Colorado fuses tidbits of Native American music with ambient-electronic soundscapes, funky horn charts, and driving backbeats. And the poetry uttered here is hip to the bone: Think of Ginsberg or Kerouac reciting tales about hitchhiking on Route 66, amid underlying sounds of the Wild West combined with evocative harmonic developments. At times the group ventures into techno/house music, and it’s all sharply produced. Hence, the artist’s frontier spirit casts a modern edge within familiar musical terrain.

The Denver Post
“If you follow jazz in Denver to any degree, you're probably familiar with stalwart KUVO-FM deejay Andy O'Leary, perhaps the most knowledgeable improvisation aficionado in this time zone. O'Leary and co-conspirator Gary Hoover make their sonic obsessions available in CD form on "Coyote Poets of the Universe" (Square Shaped Records), a disc firmly committed to its own gregarious eccentricity. A fusion of ambient, world beat, other-world beat and, well, fusion itself, this music works best on the vaguely Prime Time-esque "Sunglasses a la Mode" (with microtonal guitarist Neil Haverstick) and the punchy "Albuquerque." And O'Leary's occasional poetry readings might expand your mind too.”

And now, for something completely different (in this magazine that’s saying something)…combines jazz, ethic motifs and impressionistic poetry in an artistic stew that at first might seem a bit schizoid…Somehow, all these seemingly disparate parts fit together into a fun, entertaining listen. And that’s saying something as well.

Aiding & Abetting
Space western music (think Hans Zimmer’s score for Thelma and Louise, but with more bounce). Then add in poetry read by the poets (and edited by the band). Some work better than others…that’s the way of poetry, I think. But this is never dull. There’s always something cool happening along the edges.

Coyote Poets - Movin’ To The Moment 4/4
O's Notes: They Poets are back with more acid jazz. It is funky and electronic with club beats that have sizzle. And yes, there is some poetry. Listen to “The Dream Car We Drove West” for a taste and also to “The Day Twisted” which includes cool music with brass riffs behind it while “Padmed's Blue Wheelbarrow” had a funky James Brown beat. The Coyote Poets are doing something different, pushing the envelope and taking jazz in yet another direction.

Coyote Poets Of the Universe: Unmistakable Evidence
Midwest Record Recap, 01/10/07
The Colorado contigent of the jam band world has the attendant mishagass that comes from their section of the world and with their third release, they've chosen to define themselves as 'eclectic Americana'. Why not? This really is a crew you can't give a label to. Orginally springing from an NPR broadcast that needed a crew that could deliver a sound that was something like the real left side of the 60's felt like. They might have sprung from NPR, but they don't wear the mode on their sleeve. This genre busting crew has the chops to play about anything and are a special treat for the sonic lefty looking for some sonic adventure that is close to early Zappa in spirit.
